Governor Kasich Signs 3-Foot Passing into Law
Ohio motorists will need to keep 3 feet in mind when passing Ohio bicyclists beginning March 19, 2017. That is when House Bill 154 becomes effective after Governor Kasich signed the bill yesterday. The new law will:
1. Define the “safe distance” by which Ohio motorists must pass bicyclists as at least 3 feet.
2. Permit any Ohio vehicle to proceed through an intersection after stopping and yielding right-of-way, even when not detected by the device meant to move the signal from red to green.
The Ohio Bicycle Federation (OBF) is the statewide advocacy organization representing Ohio bicyclists. This not-for-profit alliance of expert individuals and bicycling groups has worked since 2009 for passage of a 3-foot passing clearance bill.
